The cyantotypes are an environmentally friendly process which uses sunlight for exposure and available water sources for development. I use 100% cotton paper or fabric which I saturate with with ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. Then I carefully arrange a design of botanicals and such. I then expose the light sensitive paper to the direct sunlight for various amounts of time depending on the season and time of day. The clothing is 100% wearable and washable with a non-phosphate soap and does not fade. This series began in 2008 and was inspired by Anna Atkins and my love of horticulture. Anna Atkins is considered the first person to publish a book with photographic images and also the first female photographer. I adore her books of British algae published in 1843. Not only are they important scientific specimens but also beautiful works of art.
