This series evolved from a recurring dream of an underground matriarchal society. These women were swept from the sea onto a desolate and barren land. Out of this deterioration and from within themselves they create a new language.
To actualize this dream, I created a set in my studio with found objects and painted backdrops. Women were invited to enter the space unclothed and I choreographed a scene. The arrangement of the sets usually suggests a sacred feminine ritual and offers a mood of deterioration, which by its existence provides an anticipation of action. There is healing, cleansing, birth, blood, water and war.
All of the photographs are original 20 x 20 silver gelatin sepia-toned and hand painted prints. They are encased in a metal book form. This book is hinged in the center, with the photograph on the right side and the left side covered in suede matting with various totem objects such as snail shells, cows teeth, fish hooks, etc. attached.
